Celebrating Jarteau Israel of LANBI Center for Civics & Humanities

A Lifelong Commitment to Orange

Jarteau Israel of the LANBI Center has spent decades giving back to the Orange community. Having lived in Orange for over 40 years, Jarteau has been a steadfast advocate for immigrant families and community development. For Jarteau, building a thriving Orange is deeply personal.

“This is my hometown—the first place I came to when I immigrated to this country,” Jarteau shared. “Orange gave me so much, and I want to ensure that it continues to grow and provide opportunities for others.”

LANBI Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, began as an ESL program for immigrant communities. Today, it provides extensive support to newly arrived immigrants, including legal representation for asylum seekers and assistance with family reunification through humanitarian parole. Jarteau’s intimate knowledge of immigration law—paired with his ability to speak four languages—has allowed him to serve families with compassion and expertise.

“The opportunity my parents provided me—a decent education and a supportive environment—inspired me to give back,” Jarteau said. “You can’t see progress if you sit on the sidelines. You have to get involved.”

Jarteau’s involvement extends far beyond his role at LANBI. As a product of the Orange Public Schools system, he has served on the Board of Education, worked at the public library, and participated in various volunteer boards. He takes pride in his hometown’s diversity and growth, highlighting its unique blend of history, culture, and access to resources.

“Orange is a bedroom community with pockets of immigrants from all over the world,” Jarteau explained. “It’s a place where you know your mayor and councilmembers by name. You can make a phone call and get help. That’s the beauty of Orange—it’s a true community.”

Jarteau has admired HANDS for years. “HANDS is always available,” Jarteau explained. “You can pick up the phone and talk to them. They’re hands-on, they’re local, and they truly care about the community. Not many organizations in Essex County are doing what HANDS does.”

Jarteau’s dedication to Orange is rooted in his belief that the city’s potential is limitless. He points to the city’s convenient access to public transportation, its rich history, and its growing diversity as key assets. Programs for homebuyers and other local government initiatives are creating opportunities for new and long-term residents alike.

“This is where my heart is,” Jarteau said. “Orange has given me so much, and I’m proud to be part of its growth. Together, we can build a thriving, vibrant community for generations to come.”

Thank you, Jarteau, for all you do for your hometown community!
