Celebrating Ben Hersey of My Abode NJ

Building Community One Repair at a Time

Ben Hersey, founder of My Abode NJ, has spent his life building things—both in the physical and metaphorical sense. After living in New York City for 15 years with his wife and constantly adapting their rented spaces to meet their needs, Ben discovered a passion for repairs and remodeling. This passion grew as he transitioned to a new chapter of life in New Jersey, where he combined his artistic roots with a knack for solving problems to launch My Abode NJ.

“For most of my life, I’ve been a builder and a problem solver,” Ben shared. “There’s something incredibly satisfying about improving someone’s space and seeing how it positively impacts their day-to-day life.”

What began as a side project to remodel his brother-in-law’s Delaware beach house evolved into a thriving handyman business. Over the years, Ben has tackled projects ranging from drywall repairs and painting to mounting TVs and replacing fixtures. Though his artistic side enjoys the “big wow” of larger remodels, Ben finds deep satisfaction in helping people with smaller tasks that improve their homes and lives.

A Partnership Rooted in Community

In August 2024, Ben’s path crossed with HANDS. Kathleen Devine discovered My Abode NJ through Thumbtack and reached out for help with a few small jobs for HANDS’ properties. That interaction quickly grew into a unique partnership, as HANDS needed someone reliable to address ongoing tenant requests. Ben’s expertise and dedication proved to be the perfect fit.

“The great thing about partnering with HANDS is that I’m able to be in one general location for the day and focus on the needs of the tenants,” Ben explained. “It’s a win-win. HANDS gets someone trustworthy and hands-on, and I get to address the needs of the community.”

This partnership allows HANDS to fulfill its mission of creating and maintaining spaces that foster thriving, interconnected communities. Ben’s work has taken him to places like 400 Jefferson Street, where a mix of artists, entrepreneurs, and residents form a vibrant microcosm of creativity and collaboration. From repairing leaks in artist lofts to replacing closet doors for nurses, Ben’s work touches lives and spaces in meaningful ways.

“One of my first jobs with HANDS was fixing leaks in an incredible painter’s studio,” Ben recalled. “Down the hall was a father-daughter artist team. Around the corner, I did some repairs for an ad agency that shared space with a photographer and recording studio. It’s amazing to see how HANDS’ spaces bring all kinds of people together.”

Building Health and Wealth

For Ben, building health and wealth is about more than physical repairs. It’s about nurturing a community where residents feel supported, valued, and connected.

“HANDS operates with a big-picture vision—creating spaces for people to live, work, and create,” Ben said. “But the day-to-day maintenance is just as important. Fixing a mold issue or replacing an electrical outlet isn’t just about safety; it’s about fostering a sense of well-being and pride in the community.”

By serving as a bridge between HANDS and its tenants, Ben plays a vital role in ensuring that properties remain not only functional but also thriving. His effective communication style—from managing timelines to clearly explaining repair processes—helps residents feel heard and cared for.

“People are more patient and understanding when they feel included in the process,” Ben noted. “It’s all about creating trust and buy-in.”

Ben’s work with HANDS exemplifies how small, consistent efforts can make a big difference in people’s lives. Through his dedication, Ben isn’t just repairing walls and fixing leaks—he’s helping to shape a thriving Orange where neighbors know each other’s names and care for one another.

Thank you, Ben, for all you do for HANDS and the community!
